As we mark International Women’s Day 2026, the Cardiff and SE Wales JLD celebrates the women who empower us and have helped shape our profession and our lives. In a profession that has only recently begun to see women reach equal levels of seniority, this day reminds us of the progress made and the work still ahead.

For many, the day is about recognising the accomplishments and resilience of women both within and beyond the legal industry. One member reflected that International Women’s Day is about “making women’s successes visible and ensuring younger generations see strong role models who inspire confidence and ambition.” Others emphasised the importance of creating spaces where women can “contribute, lead and thrive, without barriers.” In a competitive industry like law, taking time to acknowledge everyday successes and the collective effort behind them feels especially meaningful.

The committee also spoke powerfully about the women who inspire them. Some remarked on the women closest to them: mothers who paused their careers to raise families, yet continued to champion their children’s ambitions with unwavering support. Others highlighted women who speak up, create equal spaces, and refuse to be diminished for asserting themselves. Many found inspiration in women who “keep going, even when things aren’t easy, and who aren’t afraid to carve their own path while staying true to who they are.”

These reflections echo a wider truth about working in law today: we are surrounded by exceptional women: colleagues, mentors, supervisors, trainees, and peers who model leadership and resilience every day. Their willingness to share knowledge and raise others strengthens both our workplaces and the legal industry.

Alleyship also plays an important role in this progress. When individuals choose to listen to and support ideas and challenge behaviours that hold women back, they directly help create spaces where everyone can thrive.

As we celebrate International Women’s Day, we reaffirm our commitment to building a legal community where everyone has the opportunity to succeed. Today is not only a moment of celebration but a call to continue championing progress and creating equal opportunities and spaces for women.
